Breast Self-Examination – How to Examine

 

Breast self-examination is an important part of your breast health. A breast self-exam for breast awareness helps you to understand the normal appearance, feel of your breasts and recognize breast problems. A self-examination of the breast can find suspicious areas such as any lump in your breast body part early so that it seems any changes in your breast that need attention. 

                                       

When to Check for Breast-Self Exam

 

The best time to do a monthly examine your breasts is usually 1 week after your menstrual period starts when your breasts are least likely to be swollen or tender or lumpy.

How to do a Self-Breast Exam

1. Stand in front of a mirror where you can clearly see your breasts and perform breast self-examination.

 

2. Look for any changes such as skin puckering (small folds), dimpling (depression), nipple discharge, skin that looks like an orange peel or changes in size, shape, or the symmetry of the breast.

 

Next, Use Your Hands to Examine Your Breasts

 

3. Lying Down

You have to choose a bed or other flat surface to lie down on your back. Then place your right hand behind your head and with the middle fingers of your left hand, gently press down using small motions to examine the entire right breast. 

When you lie down, the breast tissue spreads out over your chest, making it thinner and easier to feel lumps or changes.

You have to check your entire breast by feeling all of the tissue from the collarbone to the bottom of the bra line and from the armpit to the breastbone.

 

4. in the Shower


It easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, breasts with soap to help your fingers glide more smoothly over your skin.

 

Place your left hand on your hip and with the help of your right hand have to feel in the left armpit and repeat on the other side. Check both sides for any lumps or thickenings above and below your collarbone.

 

You can use an up-and-down pattern or a spiral pattern to examine your breast. Move your fingers slowly on breast tissue in a small coin-sized circular motion.

 

According to the American Cancer Society, you can examine your breasts using 3 different levels of pressure to feel all of your breast tissue. You have to feel all the tissue from the front to the back of your breasts.

 

Use three different levels of pressure-

 

1.  Light pressure


Used to feel the tissue close to the skin surface. Or for the skin and tissue just beneath, use light pressure.

 

2.  Medium pressure


Use medium pressure for tissue in the middle of your breasts used to feel a little deeper.

 

 3. Firm pressure


Use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back, feel your tissue close to your breastbone and ribs. When you reached the deep tissue, you should be able to feel down to your ribcage.

Avoid lifting your fingers away from the skin as you feel any lumps, unusual thicknesses, or any kind of changes.


You must bring in takes practice to perform a breast self-exam to observe breast health.

 

What to do if You Find a Lump

 

1. Don’t panic if you think you feel a lump in your breast, contact your doctor.

2Don’t hesitate to call your doctor if you’ve noticed a lump or other breast change that seems new.

 

At an appointment to diagnose and evaluate a breast lump, your doctor will take your health history and do a physical exam of the breast, and can be recommended for a breast ultrasound or breast imaging tests.
