Child Survival and Safe Motherhood (CSSM)

CSSM was the project started by government of India in collaboration with UNICEF.

The main goal  of CSSM is expand the universal immunization Programme in an order to reduce infant mortality and morbidity rates.

Also the Strategies have been undertaken to reduce the maternal morbidity and mortality rates 


Strategies for CSSM

1. Child survival intervention

1. Essential newborn care

2. Immunization

3. Management of diarrhea

4. Management of acute

5. Vitamin A prophylaxis


2. Safe motherhood interventions

1. Immunization of pregnant women

2. Prevention and treatment of anaemia

3. Antenatal care

4. Identification of maternal complications

5. Delivery by skilled personnel

6. Promoting institutional delivery

7. Management of post birth emergency

8. Birth spacing

9. Post natal complication or obstetric complication

10. Management of post delivery complications

(Postpartum hemorrhage; postpartum sepsis (group A streptococcus)


Strategies to Meet Objectives

1. Strengthening of first referral unit (FRU)

a. Emergency obstetrics services

b. Emergency services for newbors, infants, children

2. Training of traditional birth attendant (TBAs)

3. The subcentres in the rural areas has to be equipped with necessary resources required for the safe delivery practices and preventing further complication.

4. Educating the staff personnel to practice essential newborn care (warmth, maintaining respiration, breast feeding, preventing infections).
