Positive Pressure Ventilation
Positive pressure ventilation, pressure greater than atmospheric pressure applied, in which lung distension occurs through increasing pressure in the airways during inspiration.
Types of Positive Pressure Ventilation
1. Pressure cycled ventilators
a. Pressure support ventilation
b. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure)
c. BiPAP (Bilevel positive airway pressure)
2. Time cycled ventilators/Flow-cycled ventilation
Used in newborns and infants
3. Volume cycled ventilators
a. Control mode
b. Assist mode
c. Assist/control mode
d. Intermittent mandatory ventilator (IMV)
e. SIMV (Synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilator)
