types of oxygen masks

Oxygen Delivery Devices

Low-Flow Oxygen Delivery

1. Nasal cannula (nasal prongs)

2. Simple face mask

3. Non re-breather mask

It consists of a face mask connected to a reservoir bag that's filled with a high concentration of oxygen. The reservoir bag is connected to an oxygen tank.

The mask has a one-way valve system, generally only used for short-term increases in oxygenation.

Moderate-Flow Oxygen Delivery

4. Partial non-rebreather mask

5. Hudson mask (rarely used)

High flow oxygen delivery

6. High Flow Nasal prongs

7. High flow venturi mask

Delivers 24-60% oxygen

Different colours deliver different flow rates and oxygen percentage.

Flow rate along with percentage of oxygen delivered varies with colour.

Colour types are;

BLUE = 2-4L/min = 24% O2

WHITE = 4-6L/min = 28% O2

YELLOW = 8-10L/min = 35% O2

RED = 10-12L/min = 40% O2

GREEN = 12-15L/min = 60% O2

Venturi masks are often used in COPD, where it is important not to over-oxygenate the patient.

7. Face tent

Face tent is shield-like device that fits under the patient's chin and encircles the face.

8. Oxygen hood

Oxygen hood is used for babies.
