Parts of Mouth

Mouth


Mouth is first gastrointestinal organ. Mouth is bounded by muscle and organ.


Structure Associated with Mouth


1. Laterally - Muscles of the cheeks. 

2. Superiorly - Hard palate and soft palate

3. Inferiorly - Tongue and soft tissues of the floor of the mouth


Parts of Mouth


Mouth divided into two parts-


1. Buccal Cavity

The cavity or space outside the gums and teeth is known as buccal cavity. Buccal cavity is bounded by lips and cheeks on the outerside and teeth and gums on the inside.


2. Oral cavity

The cavity or space behind the teeth and gums to the throat is oral cavity.


Organs of Mouth


1. Lips

4. Teeth

5. Palate; Hard and soft palate

6. Tongue

7. Uvula

8. Salivary glands


1. Lips


Lips are muscular folds, anterior organ of mouth.

Lips consists fibroelastic connective tissue and orbicularis oris muscle (make difference shapes).

It appears reddish color, has high blood supply (capillary bed), covered externally by skin and internally by mucous membrane.

Parts of Lips


1. Hairy skin

2. Vermilion border

3. Vermilion 

4. Oral mucosa


Function of Lips


1. Cover mouth; surround the entrance to the oral cavity

2. Sensory receptor

3. Aids in speech

4. Hold the food

5. Interior surface of lips is lined with a moist mucous membrane

6. In adults, outer lip skin is thicker and contains sweat glands, sebaceous glands and hair follicles.



2. Cheeks


Cheeks are lateral wall of the mouth. Mucous membrane lining of lips and cheeks.

Cheeks consist of an interior lining of moist stratified squamous epithelium (non-keratinize).


Function of Cheeks


1. Buccal fat pad (gives cosmetic effect)

2. Hold food in position, chew conveniently

3. Help in mastication and speech process

4. Facial expression

5. Move food around the place (up and down)
