phases of swallowing

Act of movement of food from the mouth, by way of the pharynx and esophagus, to the stomach.

After food in mouth is chewed and moistened and softened, lubricated by saliva, mucus Known as bolus, then ready to be swallowed, involved mouth, pharynx and esophagus.

Movement of food from mouth into the stomach achieving by act of swallowing or deglutition.

Stages of swallowing

Three stages are-

1. Voluntary oral phase ( mouth to oropharynx)

2. Involuntary pharyngeal phase (oropharynx to  esophagus)

3. Involuntary esophageal phase (esophagus to stomach)

1. Voluntary Oral Phase (Mouth to Oropharynx)

Swallowing start when bolus forced to back of oral cavity and into pharynx. Bolus moves from oral cavity into the oropharynx; voluntary phase of swallowing end where bolus touches entrance of pharynx.

2. Involuntary Pharyngeal Phase (Oropharynx to  Esophagus)

1. Begins involuntary pharyngeal phase.

2. Stimulate glossopharyngeal nerve.

3. Impulse swallowing center of medulla oblongata.

4. Regulated impulse to muscle of pharynx, oesopgaus, stomach and breathing muscles.

5. Initiate peristalisis movement way to oesopgaus

6. Bolus moves from the oropharynx into the esophagus; involuntary proces of swallowing.

3. Involuntary Esophageal Phase (Esophagus to Stomach)

Peristalisis coordinates constraction and relaxation of circular and longitudinal layer of muscularis pushes food bolus onward that propel food to oesophagus to stomach.

Involuntary proces of swallowing; bolus moves through the esophagus and into the stomach.

Control of Swallowing by Medulla Oblongata

1. Entry of bolus into the oropharynx

2. Stimulates the glossopharyngeal nerve
