Pleura

Pleura

Each lung associated with pleural membrane (consist of close sac of serous membrane, contain serous; pleural fluid).

Layers of Pleura

Pleura has 2 layer

1. Visceral pleura (inner)

2. Parietal pleura (outer)

1. Visceral pleura (inner)

Directly on the surface of lung, covering each lobe and passing into the fissures which separate  them.

2. Parietal pleura (outer)

Lines the wall of thoracic cavity, it continuous with visceral pleura around edge of hilus.

Pleural Space

Pleura cavity (pleural space) pleural sac.

Thin fluid- filled space between visceral and parietal pleura is pleural cavity.

Contains serous fluid, secreted by epithelial cell of membrane.

Function of Pleura

1. Lubricant for lungs

2. Aid in mechanism of breathing

3. Covering each lobe

4. Separate the lung from medially located mediastinum

5. Prevent friction during breathing
