Erythropoiesis

How RBCs (erythrocytes) formed?

Erythropoiesis

Erythropoiesis is the process which produces. erythrocytes (red blood cell).

Formation of red blood cell and platelets, which occurs in bone.

Stem cells, cell with the unique ability to develop into specialized cell types in the body.

Erythro means "red" poiesis means "to make".

Erythropoiesis is the process which produces red blood cells (erythtocytes), which is the development from erythropoietic stem cell to mature red blood cell.

Process of development of erythrocytes or RBCs is known as erythropoiesis. It takes about 7days.

Process of Erythropiesis/ Erythrocyte Prroduction

Erythrocytes are derived from large embryonic cells in bone marrow called stem cells or hemocytoblast which are ability to become different kinds blood cells.

Rate of erythrocytes formation by red bone marrow equals the rate of erythrocytes destruction by macrophages.

Life Span of Erythrocytes

Life span of RBCs is 80- 120 days. It normally in circulation for about 120 days in male and 110 days in female.

Destruction of Erythrocytes,

Process of breakdown of erythrocytes is called Hemolysis.

Production and destruction (in the spleen) of RBCs are maintained at an equal rate.

Note - Old red blood cells are recycled in the spleen, and platelets and ,WBCs are stored there.

Process of Erythropoiesis

Hemocytoblast formed inside stem cell in Bone marrow.

Stem cell (Hemocytoblast)

Nucleus contain ribosome    Proerythroblast

Nucleus size decreases.       Early erythroblast

Towards surface                    Late erythroblast

Attach to surface                   Normoblast

Nucleus outside

Or ejection of nucleus

                                              Formation of Reticulocyte (immune RBCs)

(Reticulocytes develop into mature RBCs within 2-3 days)

                                               RBC formed (mature RBC)

                                               Erythrocytes

Hemocytoblast differentiate into proerythroblasts.

Differentiate into erythroblasts

Immature RBC begin synthesizing and storing Hb.

Elect organelles and nucleus and differentiate into Reticulocyte.

Mature into Erythrocytes and entercirculation.
