 Relationship of Nutrition with Health

1. Growth and development

Good nutrition is essential for attainment of proper growth and development of foetal life and child birth.

Physical growth

Intellectual developing

Learning and behavior

Adequate nutrition is also needed in adult life maintenance of optimal health.

Elder people need special nutrition due to their physiological and chronological changes.

Pregnant and lactating mothers required more protein, calories and some other nutrients to  Prevent abortion, growth retardation  and LBW (low birth rate babies).


Specific deficiency disease


Malnutritioal directly responsible for certain specific nutritional deficiency diseases.

The commonly reported once in India is protein energy malnutrition (PEM), blindness, goiter, anaemia, Berri-berri and rickets etc. 

There is increased incidence of abortion, prematurity still birth and low birth rate in malnutrition mothers.

So good nutrition is essential for prevention of specific nutritional deficiency disease.

Promotion of Health and treatment of deficiency disease.


Resistance to infection 

Nutrition rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals present infection like like tuberculosis infection in turn may aggravate (increasing).

Malnutrition affected by food intake,  absorption and metabolism of Nutrients. 

Well balanced diet protect ourself throughout life from opportunistic infection.

Good nutrition also enhance wound healing in the patient's with different types of sugical operation.



Mortality and morbidity

Health indicates show high death rate and sickness rates in developing country than developed country.

Malnutrition is one cause of infant mortality and morbidity and also lower the expectation of life.

Malnutrition is also responsible for obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular and renal diseases, liver disorders, gallbladder disease.

To minimize the incidence of nutritional deficiency our government has launched many nutritional programs.

For example; mid day meal programme

ICDS (integrated child development scheme)

Anaemia control programmes and 

Iodine deficiency

Disorders control programme etc.
