Kidney - External Anatomy

Shape, Size and Weight

Each kidney is a bean shaped organ.

It weight is about 150gms.

11cm long, 6cm wide and 3cm thick (each kidney).

Location

Kidney lie retroperitoneally (behind the peritoneum) in the abdomen, either side of vertebral column.

The kidney lies on above the waist between the parietal peritoneum and the posterior wall of abdomen one on each side of vertebral column.

It is behind the peritoneal lining of the abdominal cavity and below the diapgragm.

 It is retroperitoneal organ (including ureters and adrenal gland).

The right kidney is slightly lower than left kidney, this is because the space is occupied the right liver lobe above.

They extend from the level of 12th T vertebrae to 3rd L vertebrae.

Kidneys are embadded in hand held in position by a mass of fat.

Renal fascia encloses the kidney and the renal fat.

Each kidney is capped by a adrenal gland.


Organ associated with kidney

1. Right kidney

1. Right superiorly; right adrenal gland

2. Anteriorly; right lobe of liver and duodenum

3. Posteriorly; diaphragm and muscles of posterior abdominal wall.

2. Left kidney

1. Superiorly; left adrenal gland

2. Anteriorly; spleen, stomach, pancreas and jejunum, descending colon

3. Posteriorly; Diaphragm and muscles of posterior abdominal wall.
