Endotracheal tube (ETT) suction
Endotracheal suctioning procedure is removal of secretions through an endotracheal tube with the help of mechanical suction device.
Type of ET suction
1. Open suction
Disconnecting the patient ETT from the ventilation device during the procedure and then reconnecting it following the procedure.
2. Close suction
Closed suctioning allows a suction catheter to be inserted into the endotracheal tube through a one-way valve, with no need to disconnect the patient from the ventilator.
The patient should be hyperoxygenation by delivery of 100% oxygen for >30 sec prior to oxygen.
Sterile suction catheter size;
Adult; 12-14fr
Children; 8-10fr
Suction duration of 10 to 15 seconds for adults and 5 seconds or less for pediatric patients and neonates.
Suction Pressure
Adult; 100-120 mmHg
Children; 50-100 mmHg
Infant; 40-60 mmHg
Scheduled frequency of performing ETS every 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, or even 12 hours.
