Endotracheal Tube Suction Procedure
ETT suction is common procedure in the intensive care unit.
1. Maintain sterility
2. Normal saline instillation (NSI) lubricates the ETT so that the suction catheter will pass more easily and dilutes secretions and helps to stimulate a cough.
3. Insert the suction catheter approximately 15cm without applying suctioning.
4. Method use; Open endotracheal suctioning
5. Patient is temporarily removed from the ventilator, while ETS performed.
6. Using the dominant thumb, depress the suction control valve to apply continuous suction and withdraw catheter with in 10-15 sec and pressure setting kept oin range 100-120mmHg to avoid trachea damage.
7. Using the nondominant thumb and forefinger, stabilize the airway while withdrawing the catheter from ETT.
6. Return patient to Ventilator after ETT suction.
7. Discard the catheter tube; sinusegle only.
8. Documenting in patient's file.
Closed endotracheal suctioning procedure
Closed suctioning allows a suction catheter to be inserted into the endotracheal tube through a one-way valve, with no need to disconnect the patient from the ventilator.
Patient remains attached to Ventilator, ETS is performed.
