How To Insert Arterial Cannula?

Arterial cannulation is a procedure in which arterial cannula is inserted into commonly radial artery in acute and critical care settings.
Radial artery is most common site and primary site for arterial cannulation.
Femoral artery is secondary site for arterial Cannulation.
Dorsalis pedis artery is alternative site or arterial Cannulation.

Before arterial cannulation, the proper aseptic technique includes hand washing, wearing of sterile gloves, cleaning the insertion area with chlorhexidine.
After that, the point of puncture may be determined by palpation, doppler auditory assistance, or ultrasound guidance.

1. Palpate the radial artery with the non-dominant hand to identify its location.
2. Clean the site and sterilized skin;chlorhexidine
3. Allow the antiseptic to remain on the insertion site and air dry before cannula insertion.
3. Administered anesthetic is used to numb the pain. 
4. Then arterial needle is inserted into the radial artery.
Cannula inserted at 30 - 45-degree angle while watching for a blood flash.
5. Bring the cannula back, blood return indicates cannula tips nserted into lumen of the artery.
6. Engage the locking mechanism cannula to block flow of blood.
7. Secure the device with sterile device over top plastic wings.
8. Two hole are also provided to secure the device via stitching, if required.
9. Hemodynamic monitoring for cardiovascular system connect to arterial cannula.
10. Once secure in place of devices, blood can be easily withdraw for sampling.
11. Document the patient's file.
