Difference between Exotoxins and Endotoxins
Exotoxin
1. Definition
Exotoxins are heat labile protein secreted by gram +ve and gram -ve bacteria.
2. Secretion location
These are actively secreted outside cell wall by living bacteria.
3. Antigenicity
Highly antigenic and specifically neutralized by antibodies.
4. Toxicity
Highly toxic
5. Toxoid
Toxoid can made from exotoxins
6. Immunogenic process
Immune reaction are strong
7. Have very high potency
8. Fever
Usually don't produce fever in host.
9. Specific act specifically on target cell i.e nerve, muscle.
10. Act as enzyme.
11. Specific receptors are found
12. Examples; salmonella typhi
Endotoxins
1. Definition
Endotoxins are heat stable lipopolysaccharides produced by gram -ve bacteria.
2. Secretion location
These are integral part of gram -ve cell wall and lysis cause death of bacteria.
3. Antigenicity
Weakly antigenic and can't be completely neutralize by antibodies.
4. Toxicity
Moderately toxic.
5 toxoid
Toxoid can't be made.
6. Immunogenic process
Immune reaction are weak.
7. They have low potency.
8. Fever
Usually produce fever in host. Produce symptoms like fever.
9. Non-specific (in action).
10. Doesn't act as enzyme.
11. Specific receptors are not found.
12. For example; Vibrio cholera
