How to administer Oxygen Via Nasal Cannula?
Equipment required;
Oxygen source
Flowmeter
Humidifier and distilled water (for high-flow O2 therapy)
Procedure;
1. Ensure the physician's order for oxygen includes method of delivery, flow rate.
2. ssist client to semi- fowler's position.
3. Insert flowmeter into wall outlet. Attach oxygen tubing to nozzle on flowmeter.
If using a high O2 flow, attach humidifier. Attach oxygen tubing to humidifier.
If using low O2 flow attach oxygen tubing to nozzle on flowmeter.
4. Turn on the oxygen at the prescribed rate. Check that oxygen is flowing through tubing.
5. Ensure the oxygen is flowing through the tubing.
6. Place cannula prongs into nares.Adjust your nasal prongs (cannula) to ensure a comfortable fit.
3. Monitor flow rate setting and assessing for pressure areas on the skin and nares.
5. Document the delivery amount of oxygen in patient file.
