 Pinna Abnormalities


Pinna is outer ear visible part of ear, also called auricle. The function of pinna is to collect the sound. 

It is funnel shaped, amplifying the sound and directing the sound to auditory canal.


The development of pinna occur in sixth week of gestation in foetus. 

Thare are deformity in development of pinna result in;

1. Anotia; Absence of pinna

2. Microtia; Abnormally small and deformed pinna.

3. Macrotia; Abnormally large pinna

4.  Canal Stenosis; ear canal fail to develop during 7th month in utero, resulting narrow canal. 

Canal stenosis is repaired by widening canal by canalplasty.

5. Aural Atresia; Born without an ear canal.
