Bile
Bile is a fluid that is made and secreted by liver and stored in the gallbladder.
Bile colour; greenish-yellowish fluids secreted by liver cells.
It constitutes watery mixture of organic and inorganic compound.
Function of Bile
1. To carry away waste (excretory product)
2. To break down fats during digestion (digestive secretion)
Bile Amount
Hepatic cell secrete 800 - 1000ml of bile each day.
Bile pH; 7.6-8.6 (alkaline fluid)
Composition of Bile
Bile consist of -
1. Water
2. Bile acid (cholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid)
3. Bile salt
4. Cholesterol
5. Sodium bicarbonate
6. Bile pigment (mainly bilirubin)
7. Phospholiid (mainly lecithin)
Bile Salt
These are sodium and potassium salts of bile acid. Bile salt is actual component which helps break down of layer fat molecule to fat droplets and absorb fats.
Cholesterol is made soluble in bile by bile salts and lecithin.
Bile Pigment
Bile which excreted from body in feces, gives feces its dark brown colour. Bilirubin gives bile its colour.
Green colour of bile pigment which are made of hemoglobin in worn out red blood cells and transported to liver for excretion.
Bile Acid
Bile contains bile acid, which are help in digestion and absorption of fat and fat-soluble vitamins in small intestine.
Function of Bile
1. Absorption of fat
2. Emulsify fats (breakdown small droplets)
3. Neutralizes acid from stomach
4. Give feces dark brown colour
5. Bile salts act as bactericides and destroy microbes in food
6. Digestion of fat
8. Excretion of bilirubin
9. Bile produce from liver and release into duodenum via common bile duct
10. Bile can be stored and concentrated in gall bladder when not need immediately for digestion (transferred to gallbladder through cystic duct)
