Stretch receptors bin lung walls informs brain stem about distension level of lungs.
Movement of ribs depends on orientation of costo- vertebral and costo- transverse joint which are present in thoracic vertebrae bodies.
1. Pump handle movement
Updown movement
Mainly contribute upper ribs
Upside down movement of ribs occurs, called pump handle movement.
Increases anterio posterior diameter of thoracic.
2. Bucket handle movement
Mainly movement of lower ribs.
Increase lateral diameter of thoracic cavity.
