 Difference between Caput succedaneum and Cephalohematoma


Caput succedaneum

(Swelling of scalp during labor)

1. Lumps caused by scalp swelling due to pressure is known as Caput succedaneum.

2. Involve scalp only (soft tissue swelling).

3. Edema extends crosses sutures lines.

4. Common cause of jaundice.

5. Present at birth on normal vaginal delivery.

6. Soft pits on pressure.

7. Soft tissue edema.

8. Present at birth.

9. Disappear within 48 hours.

10. The primary system of Caput succedaneum is swollen, puffy area on the head just under skin of scalp, soft to touch.

11. No treatment required.

12. Symptoms;

1. Soft, puffy swelling on the scalp of newborn.

2. Brushing or color change on scalp swelling area.

3. Swelling is most often seen on portion of head which presented first.

13. Caused by external pressure on the baby's head during delivery.

14. Primary source of pressure comes from birth canal itself.


Cephalohematoma

(Collection of blood between baby scalp and skull).

1. Lumps caused by bleeding under scalp is known as Cephalohematoma.

2. Reptures of small vessels of head when compressed against pressure from forceps to assist bith.

3. Involve bone

4. Donot cross suture line.

5. Appears within few days after birth on normal or forceps delivery.

6. Soft, elastic but doesn't pits on pressure.

7. Collection of blood between periosteum and skull.

8. Not usually present at birth, usually due to traumatic birth.

9. Takes months to resolve.

10. Soft, raised (pool of internal area on blood) newborn head.

Protrusion or bulge in back of baby head which forms soon after birth.

11. Supportive treatment required.

12. Symptoms;

1. Soft, raised area on newborn's head.

2. Unnatural appearing on back of baby's skull (pooled blood begins to calcify; it feels harder and dense).

13. Seen in forceps delivery.
