 Difference between Growth and Development

Growth

1. Growth refers increase in cell size and number. For example; age, size, height, weight.

2. Quantitative measures

3. A part of development

4. Occurs at cellular level.

5. Brings changes in size, shape, form and structure of body.

6. Stops at the maturation (limited to definite age).

7. Can be measured directly.

8. Linked to food and age 

9. Related to one aspect of personality.

10. Growth can be measured.

11. Growth is physical aspect of organism.

12. Growth stops after certain time.

13. Not affected by learning.


Development

1. Development refers improvement (in intellectual ability/ function/ transformation/ behavior efficiency and capacity).

2. Qualitative measures

3. Include growth, morphology and differentiation (physical, mental, social and emotional).

4. Occurs at organization level

5. Bring changes in the organization and function

6. A subjective interpretation

7. Link to physical activity, education, social interaction.

8. Related to all aspect of personality.

9. It can be observed by matured behavior.

10. Development is overall changes and progressive changes of the organism.

11. Development is continuous process till death.

12. Affected by learning and experience.
