newborn reflexes

 Assessment of Reflexes;

1. Reflexes of Eye

1. Blinking

Infants blinks sudden appearance of bright light or approach of any object towards eye.

2. Pupillary reaction

Pupil constrict when bright light falls on it.

3. Doll's eyes

When infants head is slowly turned, infants eye will remain stationary.



2. Reflexes of mouth

1. Rooting

Innate response of head due to the stimulation of face, mouth or cheek by touching / stoking head turned toward hand.

2. Sucking and swallowing 

Roof of the baby's mouth touched baby start suck.

Swallow is initiated when food, liquid or saliva reaches baby throat.


3. Gag

Stimulation of posterior pharynx by food or suction causes infant to gag.


4. Extrusion

When tongue is touched or depressed, infant responds by forcing it outward.

5. Cough

Irritation of mucus membrane of larynx causes cough.


3. Reflexes bof Nose

1. Sneeze

Response of nasal passage to any irritant.

2. Glabellar 

Tapping bridge of nose (glabella) causes eyes to close tightly.


4. Reflexes of extremities

1. Grapes

Stroking palm of baby hand, baby to close his/her finger in grasp.


2. Babinski

Sole of foot stroked, big toe bend back toward top of the foot and the other toe spread.

5. Mass Reflexes

1. Moro's/ startle reflex

Loud noise, intense light, sudden movement triggered Moro reflex, spreading out arms and legs involuntary protective motor response.

For example; sensation of falling, move suddenly

2. Perez reflex

Spine stroked from tail to head, baby cry out and head will raise.


3. Tonic neck/fencing reflex

When baby is lying down their head is turned to right or left, crossponding arm extends while other arm bends to their head.


4. Galant reflex

Stroking infant along side spine with fingernails cause hip to move toward stimulation side.



5. Dance and stepping reflex/ walk or dance reflex

Held baby upright with his or her feet touching a solid surface. 

6. Crawl reflex

When baby placed on abdomen, infant make crawling movement.

7. Babkin reflex

Deep pressure (stimulus) applied to palm of both hand while infant in supine position, tilt head forward, opening of mouth and closing of eye.
