posterior pituitary

Posterior lobe

Produce no hormone of it's own but only stores and release.

Oxytocin hormone and antidiuretic hormone.

Posterior pituitary (Neurohypophysis)

The Neurohypophysis constitute posterior 1/3rd of pituitary.

This is formed from nervous tissue and consists of nerve cells surrounded by supporting cells called pituicytes (mass of neuroglia) and nerve fibers.

It releases neurohormone (hormone secreted by neurons) received from hypothalamus.

This lobe is hormone storage area;

The nerve fiber arise from cell bodies in hypothalamus, travel down from bundle called hypo-thalamic- hypophyseal track and end in posterior lobe.

Hypothalamic neuron synthesize hormones, transported them down and store in posterior pituitary until nerve signal trigger their release from Hypothalamus.
