Vitamin B9

 Vitamin B9

Called folic acid / vitamin M/ Pteroyl glutamic acid (PGA).

Rapidly destroyed when exposed to light.

Folic acid composed of pteridine attach to para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and with glutamic acid.


Folate

Dihydrofolate

Tetrahydrofolate; active or coenzyme form of folic acid.

Liver main storage house for folate.


Function

1. Essential for maturation of RBCs.

2. Act as coenzyme in synthesis of methionine, purine and pyrimidine ring.

3. Aids in production of DNA and RNA.


Recommended daily allowance (RDA)

Children; 100-300mcg/ day (μg/day)


Clinical manifestation

1. Glossitis

2. Cheilosis 

3. Gastrointestinal disturbance

4. Severe deficiency result in infertility or sterility.

5. Megaloblastic anaemia in infant and children.

(Present in Malnourished children).

Hemoglobin; 5-8mg/dl, RBC count; 2.5-3 million/mm3

Management

1. Oral administration of folic acid

2. Ferrous salt in dose

3. Vitamin B9 injection

4. Vitamin B12 injection
