Active form of Vitamin B6 is pyridoxal phosphate.

Absorption

Absorbed in small intestine.


Recommended daily allowance

Infant's 7-12 months; 0.3mg/day

Children 1-3 years; 0.5mg/day

Functions

1. Pyridoxal phosphate cofactor in amino acid metabolism.

2. Necessary for enzymatic reaction, regulate Metabolism of glucose, release of glucose from glycogen.

3. Essential for maintaining nerves.

4. Essential for fatty acid synthesis


Clinical manifestations of deficiency

1. Peripheral neuritis

2. Impaired immune response due to impaired antibody production.

3. Nervous irritability and confusion

4. Skin lesion around eye, nose and mouth.
