Breast Self Examination (BSE)
BSE includes inspection and palpation of breast in both standing and lying positions.
BSE pratice include inspection of breasts in front of mirror, palpation of entire area of breast using flat pads of fingers at different level of pressure in a specific pattern and motion in standing and lying position.
Guidelines for Breast Self Examination
Step1
Before standing mirror
Inspect both breast (discharge from nipples or puckering); contract into wrinkles or small folds, dimpling or scaling of skin
Step2
Stand closely to mirror
Clasp (grasp) your hands behind your head and press your hand forwards.
Note any change in contour (outline) of breast.
Step 3
Next, press your hands on your hips and bow slightly towards mirror, pull shoulders and elbows forward.
Step 4
Raise left arm.
Use three or four fingers of your right hand to feel left breast, firmly, carefully and thoroughly.
Beginning at outer edge, press flat part of fingers in small circles, moving circle slowly around the breast, gradually towards nipple, be sure cover entire breast.
Pay special attention area between breast and underarm.
Feel for any unusual lump or masses under skin.
Step 5
Gently squeeze nipple and look for discharge.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 on right breast.
If any discharge in present see, consult your doctor.
Step 6
Step 4 and 5 should be repeated lying down.
Lie flat on your back, right arm over head and pillow and folded towel under your left shoulder.
This position flatten breast and make it easier to examine.
Use same circular motion describe above.
Repeat on your right breast.
