Oral Thrush and Perianal Thrush
Oral Thrush (Mouth Thrush)
Oral thrush is a fungal infection caused by candida albicans.
Oral thrush characterized by white patches on the mucus membrane of mouth.
When attempt to wipe off bleeding occurs.
Etiology
Infection occur during from maternal vaginal infection.
Occur after birth through contact with infected infants.
Contaminated bottle teats (nipple) and contaminated hands who give care to neonates.
Perianal Thrush
Perianal thrush may cause soreness of buttocks.
Affected area of skin is red and infection extend around umbilical area.
Treatment
1. Topical application prescribed by physician
Nystatin or Amphotericin cream, clotrimazole or miconazole suspension is done.
Suspension administered inside infant's mouth Three times a day (TDS) for 4-5 days.
