Skin infection in newborn
The most causes of skin infection in newborn are staphylococcal in origin.
1. Septic spots
Cotton swab soaked in chlorhexidine 0.5% in spirit and isolate pustules.
If pustules persist swab taken for culture and sensitivity and prescribed antibiotic started.
2. Paronychia
Injury to folds of skin surrounding finger or toe nails result in infection.
In early stage chlorhexidine 0.5% in spirit use to dabbing or wipe area and dry up.
Baby's hand enclosed in mitten; to prevent him for touching his eyes.
3. Pemphigus neonatorum
Rare but highly contagious skin disease characterized by watery blisters.
Isolate the baby and swab taken from lesion for culture.
Administered antibiotics intravenously.
Severe form of pemphigus is Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (Ritter's disease), which results in exfoliation of skin cover wide area.
