Tracheostomy care help prevent risk of infection, plugs, mucus or blockages, and breathing problems.
Tracheostomy care kit containing;
1 tracheostomy tube
1 trach brush
4 gauze sponges
2 pipe cleaners
2 Q-tips
1 Spare ties
1 pair vinyl gloves
1 trac dressing
A clean tray containing;
1. Hydrogen peroxide
2. Normal saline
3. Sterile gloves
Procedure
1. First suction the oropharynx
1. Suction the tracheostomy tube, clears the secretions from airway so it's easier to breathe.
2. Clean the suction catheter, helps prevent infection.
3. Replace the inner cannula.
4. Clean skin around tracheostomy, cleaning the skin around the stoma with single stroke.
5. The bandage (gauze dressing) between tube and neck helps catch mucus. It also keeps tube from rubbing on neck. Change the bandage when it is dirty, at least once a day.
6. Change the ribbons (trach ties) that keep your tube in place if they get dirty.
Make sure hold the tube in place when you change the ribbon. Be sure you can fit 2 fingers under the ribbon to make sure it is not too tight.
7. Documenting in patients file.
