Factors Affecting Growth of Bacteria
1. Nutrition
Source of carbon
Source of nitrogen
Source of energy
Small amount of phosphate
Variety of metals and iron
2. Moisture
3. Temperature
Psychrophilic; grow best temperature below 20 degree celcius.
Thermophilic; grow best high temperature 50-80 degre celcius.
Mesophilic; Best grow at 27-40 degree celcius.
4. PH
5. Oxygen
6. Carbon dioxide
7. Blood and body fluids
8. Osmotic effect
9. Light and other radiation
10. Mechanical and Sonic vibration
2. Moisture
Moisture is an essential requirement for growth of bacteria because 80% bacteria cell consist of water.
For example; leather
3. PH
Some bacteria grow in neutral media, some grown in alkaline and some grown in acidic media.
Most of medically important bacteria can grow at PH 7.2-7.6
4. Oxygen
Aerobic bacteria can grow only in presence of oxygen but strict anaerobic bacteria can grow only absent of oxygen.
5. Carbon dioxide
Small amount of carbon dioxide is required by all bacteria.
6. Light and other radiation
Bacteria grow in dark place. Bacteria can be destroyed and killed by ultraviolet rays, ionizing radiation, infra-red rays and other radiation.
7. Osmotic Effect
Osmotic pressure can change growth of bacteria.
Osmotic pressure cause destruction or brusting of cell.
8. Mechanical and Sonic vibration
Bacterial cell can be destruct and bacteria can be killed by sporicide and ultrasonic vibration.
