Bacillary dysentery

Shigella dysentery is species of rod shaped bacterial genus shigella.

Shigella species cause shigellosis (bacillary dysentery).

It is gram negative bacilli.

Shigellosis is an intestinal tract disease.

Main sign of shigella infection is diarrhea.


Morphology

Thess are gram negative bacilli.

Non spore forming, non motile, non capsulated bacilli.

Size; 0.4 X 0.6 micrometre in size.

Characteristics

These are aerobes or facultatively anaerobic.

Can grow on ordinary media at temperature of 37 degree celcius and PH 7.4

Shigella toxin produce bacillary dysentery.

Sources and Mode of Transmission

Spread from person to person with contaminated stool serving as a major source of organisms.

Flies transmit the disease.

Contaminated food and water.

Transmitted in crowding condition with poor sanitation.

1. Unwashed hands

2. Gastrointestinal

3. Contamination water infected with disease

4. Contaminated food 

5. Spread pathogens; diarrhoea with blood, mucus

6. Painful abdominal cramping

7. Due to contamination; Inflammation colon, rectal bleeding 

8. High Fever

Show pus or blood tinged mucus 

Culture and cultural characteristics

Aerobic as well as facultative anaerobes

Gram staining

Show gram -ve, non motile, non capsulated bacilli.

Biochemical reaction

Treatment and prevention

Antibiotic ciprofloxacin or Azithromycin are quite effective.

It can be prevented of water, food supply and personal hygiene.
