Klebsiella (Coliform bacilli causing UTI)
Klebsiella are gram -ve, large, non motile, non sporing, capsulated bacilli, two species of klebsiella are medically important;
1. Klebsiella pneumoniae
2. Klebsiella oxytoca
Morphology
Gram -ve, large, non motile bacilli.
Size; 1 -2 micrometre X 0.5-0.8 micrometre in size.

1. Nasal discharge
2. Inhalation
3. Urine and contaminated dust
4. Improper catheterization
5. Contaminated toilet
Pathogenesis
Lobar pneumonia in alcoholic person.
Pulmonary diseases
Foul smelling nasal discharge associated with UTI.

Specimen collection
Include nasal discharge and urine sample
Cultural characteristics and culture
Aerobic and facultative anaerobic growing on simple media optimum temperature 37 degree Celsius. On MacConkey's medium, produce pink coloured.
Gram staining and microscopic examination
Rod shaped, large, gram -ve, non-motile
Biochemical test
It ferment sugar with production of acid and gas.
Treatment
It is sensitive to sulphonamide, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol and aminoglycoside.
Nitrofurantoin and nalidixic acid is useful for treating urinary tract infection.
