Blastomycosis
Causative Agent
Blastomyces dermatitis fungus.
It is chronic infection of which may spread to other tissue particularly;
Skin (70%)
Bone (30%)
Genitourinary tract (20%)
Source of Infection
Inhalation of candida of fungus growing as saprophytes in soil.
Cause primary pulmonary disease.
Morphology
Dimorphic fungus.
In tissue and cultures at 37 degree Celsius, fungus appears as spherical or orval budding yeast cell.
At 25 degree Celsius, culture is filamentous with hyphae and may oval candida.
Laboratory Diagnosis
Specimen collection
Sputum, pus, urine, skin biopsy
KOH preparation
Buds, thick wall yeast cells.
Culture on SDA
Colonies show hyphae microconidia.
Treatment
Amphotericin B may be used.
