Major Histocompatibility (MHC) Complex
Refers a cluster of genes responsible for;
Immune response
Transplantation antigen
Proteins of complement system
Function of MHC molecules is to bind peptide fragment derived from pathogen and display them on cell surface for recognition by T cells.
Transplantation; transferring of tissue or organ from one individual to another or from part of body to another.
When donor and recipient are identical their genotype and phenotype; graft alive and healthy.
But when donor and recipient are dissimilar their genotype and phenotype; graft dies.
Due to immunological reaction graft tissue releases antigen into recipient.
Immune system of recipient recognise antigen and non self which reject the graft.
Antigen responsible for graft rejection called transplantation antigen or MHC antigen.
MHC of man - called HLA (Human leucocyte antigen), they are classified into;
MCH I and MCH ll
