RNA virus
Causes mump in human beings.
Commonly occurs in children of 5-15 years age and also in young people.
Humans are only reservoir host of mump virus.
Mump virus affect the salivary gland and swelling.
Structure
Enveloped RNA virus containing nucleocapsid protein, lipoproteins and phosphoproteins.
The enveloped contains spikes.
The virus is spherical, vary from 100-200nm.
Source and mode of Transmission
Infection transmitted by;
Inhalation
Direct contact
Fomites contaminated with saliva.
Respiratory tract is portal of entry.
Mumps affects parotid gland, salivary gland.
Mumps disease spread through infected saliva.
Pathogenesis
Virus multiply in upper respiratory tract and cervical lymph node.
Spread blood stream to various organ.
Causing enlargement of parotid gland and Salivary gland.
Symptoms
Fever
Local pain
Tenderness
Mump meningitis occurs absence of parotitis.
Laboratory Diagnosis
Specimen collection; saliva sample
Cell culture; grow on cell culture and confirmed by immunofluorescence.

Prophylaxis and Treatment
Immunization with live attenuated or combination MMR vaccine.
