Plasmodium Falciparum
1. Types of RBC invaded
Plasmodium falciparum infects all stages of erythrocytes.
2. Disease caused
Malignant tertian malaria (fever occur every 3rd day).
3. Geographical area
World wide spread species plasmodium causing malaria in human being.
4. Stages
Trophozoites - growing schizonts - rostettes - gametocytes
Mature schizonts; kidney shaped with blunt rounded end.
5. Duration of sporogony in mosquito
22-23 days at 20 degree Celsius.
10-12 days at 27 degree Celsius.
6. Duration of schizogony
12 days asexual reproduction by multiple fission founded specially parasitic sporozoans.
7. Forms found in smear
Rings and banana shaped gametocytes.
8. Number of merozoites
Released infected hepatocytes; 30,000
Developed into gametocytes ingested by feeding mosquitoes.
Released and multiply in blood stream, infect new red blood cells.
9. Complication
Thrombocytopenia; increase in platelets destruction.
10. Ability to cause Relapses
No
Plasmodium Vivax
1. Types of RBC invaded
Plasmodium vivax malaria only infects host reticulocytes, precursor of erythrocytes.
2. Disease caused
Benign tertian malaria.
Fever occurs every second day, fever stage is more prolonged and intensified.
3. Geographical area
World wide tropics but specially Saharan Africa.
4. Stages
Trophozoites- growing schizonts -Rostettes - gametocytes
Mature schizonts; spherical compact
5. Duration of sporogony in mosquito
30 days at 17.5 degree Celsius
10 days at 25-30 degree Celsius
6. Duration of schizogony
14 days.
7. Forms found in smear
Trophozoites
Schizonts and
Gametocytes
8. Number of merozoites
10,000
