Macular Degeneration

 Macular Degeneration 

Senile macular degeneration or age related macular degeneration (AMD)/ dry macular degeneration 

Causes of permanent central vision loss; older than 60 years age.

Characterized by tiny, yellowish spot (drusen; colloid bodies).


Types of Macular Degeneration

1. Non exudative AMD

Outer retina slowly breakdown; gradual decrease in central vision, retinal pigment epithelium abnormalities.

2. Exudative AMD

Wet or neovascular AMD

Development of abnormal choroidal neovascular network beneath macula.

Vessel leak fluid and blood, causing edema and development of fibrosis.


Management

1. Antioxidants/vitamin (C,E)/minerals

2. Photo-dynamic therapy (PDT)

Photosensitizers dye injected intravenously over 10 minutes.

After 15 minutes of infusion; diode is used to treat abnormal blood vessels.

3. Argon green laser photocoagulation
