Cell Cycle or Cell Division Cycle
The cell cycle is the period from
the beginning of one cell division to the beginning of the next cell division.
The cell cycle process takes place in a cell, resulting in duplication
of DNA, division of cytoplasm and organelles to produce new two daughter cells.
Get details on cell
division and types of cell division.
A cell cycle is a series of
events that takes place in a cell to grow, replicate and divide
into two new cells.
The cell cycle process occurs in four stages-
1. Gap 1 or G1 stage; Cell increases in size
2. Synthesis or S stage; Copies its DNA
3. Gap 2 or G2 stage; Prepares to divide
4. Mitosis or M stage; Divides
A cell spends most of its time interphase phase of the cell cycle.
During this time cell grows, replicates, and prepares for cell division.
Then the cell leaves interphase, undergoes mitosis phase, and completes
its division.

mitosis?
Stages of Cell Cycle
In eukaryotic cells, the cell cycle is divided into two
major phases; the Interphase Stage and the Mitosis stage (mitotic (M) phase).
During the interphase stage, the cell grows and replicates
(makes a copy of its DNA).
During the M phase, the cell separates its DNA into two sets and
divides its cytoplasm, forming two new daughter cells.
In the interphase stage, the cell gets itself ready for mitosis
or meiosis.
Interphase is the phase of the cell cycle in which the cell spends most of its time.
In the interphase stage cell grows, replicates its DNA in preparation for
mitosis.
During interphase, stage cell undergoes cell growth and replication and the cell prepares
itself for division.
An interphase portion of cell cycle includes –
1. G1 stage
2. Gap 0 stage
(resting-state - those cells that are not actively preparing to divide).
3. S stage
4. G2 stage
1. G1 phase (Gap 1)
The G1 phase is known as the cell growth phase. During this phase, the cell grows in preparation for DNA replication.
At this time, a high amount of protein synthesis
occurs and the cell grows and more organelles are produced and the volume of
the cytoplasm increases.
Gap 1 is the stage where the cell is preparing to
divide after that then it moves into the S phase.
If the cell is not to divide again, it will enter the G0
phase.
2. S phase (Synthesis)
DNA replication occurs during this S (synthesis) phase. So,
S stands for DNA synthesis.
In this phase of the cell cycle in which DNA is replicated.
After the DNA is copied, the cell moves into the G2 stage.
The centrosome replicates during the Synthesis phase of
the cell cycle.
3. G2 stage (Gap 2)
The cell resumes its growth (cell grows more) in
preparation for division, where it starts to organize and condenses the
genetic material, and prepares to divide.
What is M Phase (Mitosis)?
The next stage is the M stage, which stands for mitosis. During this nuclear division (chromosomes
separate) and cytoplasmic (cytokinesis)
division occur and produce two identical daughter cells.
After the completed M phase, the cell division occurs
and two cells are produced, and the cell cycle can begin again.
The mitosis portion of the cell cycle consists of four phases-
1. Prophase
2. Metaphase
3. Anaphase, and
4. Telophase.
