Blood Group

Blood Group

Classification of blood, based on presence and absence of antibodies and inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells.

Antigen

Red blood cells or erythrocytes contain certain proteins on their surface. These proteins are called antigens.

Antibodies

Plasma contains antibodies which will attack certain antigens if they are present.

ABO blood group is based upon the red blood cell antigens.

ABO Blood Group

There are four ABO blood group types-

Blood group                Antigen       Antibodies           Genotype

A                                    A                 anti B                    AA or AO

B                                    B                 anti A                    BB or BO

AB             A antigen and B antigen       None            AB

O                            None                   anti A and anti B      OO

1. A Blood Group

A blood group persons will have type A Antigens on the surface of red blood cells and Antibodies B in Plasma.

A person with type A blood may receive type A or type O blood but not type B or AB blood because antibodies B in recipient plasma can bind to B antigen on donar RBCs.

2. B Blood Group

B blood group individual will have type B antigen on the surface of red blood cells and antibodies A in Plasma.

People with B blood group can receive type B or type O but not type A or type AB blood.

3. AB Blood Group

AB blood group are those who will have type A and type B antigens on the surface of red blood cell and no antibodies in Plasma (antibodies A, antibodies B).

AB blood group called universal reciepient because have.no antibodies to attack antigens on donated RBCs.

4. O Blood Groups

O blood group are those who wlil have neither type A or type B antigens on the surface of red blood cells but have A antibodies and antibodies B in Plasma, called universal donar because people with type O blood have no A antigen and B antigen on their RBCs.

They can donate blood to all four ABO blood types. Type O persons requiring blood may receive only type O blood.
