grey matter and white matter

 Grey mater

The surface of the cerebral cortex is composed of grey mater which contains nerve cell bodies.

White mater

With the cerebrum the lobes are connected by masses of nerve fibers or tracks which make up the white mater of brain.

White mater consist of three types of fibers-

1. Association tracks

Association fibers are link and transmit nerve impulses between gyri of same hemisphere.

2. Commissural fibers

Commissural fibers connect one cerebral hemisphere to other corpus callosum.

3. Projection fibers

Protection fibers connect cerebrum and other part of the brain and basal ganglia, thalamus, brain stem and spinal cord.
