Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)
BFHI was launched jointly by WHO and UNICEF in 1992.
In order to promote and encourage exclusive breastfeeding.
BFHI Aims;
Improving the knowledge attitude and practices of health care workers with knowledge and skills to promote exclusive breastfeeding among infants upto age of 6 months.
Bottle feeding is biggest killer of babies.
Steps for recognized criteria for attaining status of baby Friendly Hospital
Step 1
Written breast feeding policy; routinely communicated to health staff.
Step 2
Train health care staff in skills, implement this policy.
Practical training to implement ten steps of breast feeding.
Correct position
Attachment of baby during breastfeeding
Expression of breast milk
Step 3
Informed all pregnant women about benefits and management of breast feeding.
During antenatal period; educate advantages of breast feeding for both mother and baby.
Problem like retracted, small or cracked nipple.
Problems managed during antenatal period.
Step 4
Help mothers to initiate Brest feeding with half hours of birth.
Skin to skin contact
Mother baby bonding soon after delivery.
Advised not administer prelacteal feeds.
Step 5
Show mother how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, if they are separated from their infants.
Correct technique of expression of breast milk manually or with help of breast pump; to maintain adequate lactation.

Give newborn infants only breast milk, not give food and drink, unless medically indicated
No pre lacteal food given to new born.
Only breast feeding given.
Incase breast milk not available, supplementary feeding is giving.
Step 7
Practice rooming in and allow mother and infants to remain together.
Promotes bonding between mother and baby
Helps in timely initiation of breast feeding.
Step 8
Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
Step 9
Give no artificial feed or pacifiers to baby. May cause risk of infection and non-nutritive sucking.
Expressed breast milk (squeezing milk out of breast, store, feed to baby) or any medically indicated fluid administration through katori, spoon or palady but not feeding bottle.
Step 10
Foster the establishment of breast feeding support groups.
Follow up support to breastfeeding mother discharge from hospital.
Woman Breastfeeding support group established in community for promotion of breast feeding.
Follow up support for all breast feeding mothers is necessary after discharge from the hospital.
BFHI movement active in India under national task force comprising of government of India, UNICEF, WHO, voluntary organization and professional bodies.
Recognition as Baby Friendly Hospital
1. Hospital that conduct minimum 250 deliveries per year can seek to recognization.
After implantation of 10 steps for promotion of breast feeding, self assessment form and registration form be sent to BFHI secretariate.
2. All ten criteria is visited by Assessor, spot checks andd to interview mother's and health care staff.
Assessor send report and observation to BFHI secretariate.
3. Hospital fulfilling the nutritional BFHI requirement are recognized baby Friendly.
National task force provide BFHI certificate and logo
If hospital that are unable to fullfil criteria for certification and reapply for it later on, after eliminating all short comings.
