Classification of Newborn According to Size
1. Low bith weight (LBW) infant
Birth weight <2500gm
2. Moderate low birth weight (MLBW) infant
Birth Weight; 1501- 2500gm
3. Very low birth weight (VLBW) infant
Birth Weight; <1500gm
4. Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infant
Birth weight; < 1000gm
Classification of Newborn According to Growth curve
1. Appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infant
Infant whose birth weight falls from between 10th and 90th percentile on intrauterine growth curve.
(Weight between 10th and 90th percentile)
2. Small for gestational age (SGA)infants or Small for dates (SFD)
Infant whose rate of intrauterine growth was slowed and whose birth weight fall below the 10th percentile on intrauterine growth curve.
3. Large for gestational age (LGA) infant
An infant whose birth weight falls above 90th percentile on intrauterine growth chart.
3. Classification of Newborn According to Gestational Age
1. Premature (pre term) infants
Infant born before completion of 37weeks of gestation.
2. Term inants/Full term baby
Baby born between the 37-42 weeks of gestation.
3. Post mature (post term baby)
Baby born after 42 weeks of gestation age.
4. Classification newborn according to mortality
1. Fetal death
Death of fetus after 20 week of gestation and before delivery.
2. Neonate death
Death occurs first 27 days of life.
Early neonatal death;
Death in 1st week (7days)
Late neonatal death;
Death in between 7-27 days
3. Perinatal mortality
Total number fetal death (20 weeks) plus early neonatal death (7 days) per 1000 live birth.
4. Postnatal mortality
Death of neonates occur between 28 days to 1 year.
