Eugenics dervied from Greek word eu "good or well" genos "gene/race"
Eugenics is a set of beliefs and practices that aims at improving the genetic quality of human population.
Good genes use good birth.
Categories of Eugenics
1. Positive Eugenics
2. Negative Eugenics
1.Positive eugenics
Aims to encourage reproduction among genetically advantages.
1. In vitro fertilization
2. Egg transplant
3. Cloning to improve genetic composition of population
2. Negative Eugenics
Aimed at lowering fertility among genetically disadvantages includes;
1. Abortions
2. Sterilization
3. Other method of family planning
Eugenicists encourage the reproduction of the "best and the brightest gene".
They believed that desirable characteristics such as;
Hard work, Intelligence, Physical fitness
Encouraging reproduction among those brought to be the most genetically fit
Known as positive Eugenics.
Negative eugenics
Negative eugenics improving the quality of the human race by eliminating or excluding biologically inferior people from population.
This goal required several restriction on reproductive rights, for those with defects had to be kept from reproducing.
Elderly and sick people killed under "Hitler's policy of Eugenics".
Current Trend in Eugenics
During 20th, century many countries enacted various eugenics polices and programs including;
1. Genetic screening
2. Birth control
3. Marriage restriction
4. Compulsory fertilization
5. Forced abortion or conversely forced pregnancy
