Fontanels
At birth, membrane filled space found between cranial bones is called fontanels or soft spot fontanels are;
1. Frontal (anterior fontanels)
Between angle of 2 parietal bones and frontal bone (diamond shape).
Largest of 6 fontanels.
Closes 18-24 month after child is born.
2. Posterior occipital fontanels
Between occipital bones and two parietal bones.
Diamond shape
Close 2 months after birth
3. Anterolateral sphenoid fontanels
Situated at junction of frontal, parietal, temporal and sphenoid bone (each side of skull).
Irregular shape
Closes 3 months after birth
4. Posterolateral (mastoid) fontanels
Present at junction of parietal, occipital and temporal bone.
Irregular shape
Close 1, 2 months after birth.
