Physiology of Lactation
Lactation produce due to interaction between hormones and reflexes.
Hormones; oxytocin and prolactin; glandular tissue of breast stimulated to produce milk due to hormone.
Reflexes
1. Milk secretion reflex
Prolactin reflex produced by anterior pituitary gland responsible for milk secretion by alveolar cells of breast.
Baby sucks; nerve ending in people carry message to anterior pituitary releases prolactin.
2. Milk ejection reflex (oxytocin reflex)
Produce by posterior pituitary, responsible for contraction of breast tissue.
Ejection of milk from gland into lactiferous sinuses and ducts.
Baby sucks; stimulation in nerve ending in nipple carry message to posterior pituitary produce oxytocin.
