Types of Breast Milk
Composition of breast milk varies at different stages of post natal period.
1. Colostrum
Milk secreted first 3 days after delivery.
Thick, yellow in color, rich in antibodies, vitamin A,D,E,K.
2. Transitional milk
Milk secreted during next two weeks. Immunoglobulin, protein content decreases.
Fat and sugar increases.
3. Mature milk
Follows transitional milk. Thinner, watery.
Has all nutrients for optimum growth of baby.
4. Fore milk
Milk secreted start to feed. Rich in proteins, sugar, vitamins, water.
5. Hind milk
Towards end of feed. Rich in fat, energy. Satisfy the baby's hunger.
6. Pre term milk
Breast Milk of mother who delivers prematurely.
WHO, recommends breastfeeding affect childbirth should be initiated within 30 minutes.
