How to Remove Urinary Catheter?
1. Empty any urine out of the catheter.
2. Take the drainage bag off and clamp or cap the end to prevent leaks.
3. Move the catheter tube in a full circle to the left and then to the right. Full circles in each direction make sure the catheter tube can move freely.
4. Take 5ml or 10 ml syringe. Pull back on the syringe plunger to draw water out of the balloon catheter.
Wait as the water from the balloon empties into the syringe.
This will make it deflate the balloon in bladder.
5. Ask patient to exhale and gently pull out catheter and remove it.
6. Do not force the catheter out.
6. Document to patient's file
