Urinary Catheteization
Urinary catheter (flexible tube) is inserted into the bladder through the urethra to allow urine to drain from the bladder and collect urine. The procedure called urinary catheteization.
How to insert Urinary Catheter?
Article required for urinary catheteization;
Appropriate size catheter
Xylocaine jelly
5ml/10ml Syringe
Sterile water; to inflate balloon
Drainage bag
Sterile gloves
Tape to secure catheter to thigh
Specimen jar
Procedure for Insertion of Urinary Catheter
1. Place female patient in supine position with knees bent and hips flexed.
3. Open dressing pack and prepare equipment needed using aseptic technique.
4. Wear sterile gloves follow aseptic technique.
5. Separate labia with one hand and expose urethral opening.
6. Using swabs with aseptic solution held in forceps in the other hand clean the labial folds and the urethral opening.
Move swab from above the urethral opening down towards the rectum. Discard swab after each urethral stroke into waste bag.
7. Remove catheter from packet 14fr catheter size maintaining aseptic technique.
8. Grasp the sterile catheter 5 to 7.5 cm from the distal tip and keep it from touching anything and lubricate the distal end of catheter.
9. Insert catheter into the urethral opening (urethral opening come before vaginal opening) until urine begins to flow; indicates catheter placed into bladder.
10. Inflate the balloon slowly using sterile water to the volume recommended on the catheter.
11. Always ensure urine is flowing before inflating the balloon.
12. Lumen of catheter attach to drainage system.
13. Secure the catheter to the thigh.
14. Put the urine collection beg below the level of bladder but not touch to the surface.
15. Document the patient's file.
