Campylobacter
Members of compylobacter are curved, spiral or S shaped with single flagellum similar to Vibrios.
They are microaerophilic (need O2 in very low concentration)
Cause both intestinal and extra intestinal disease.
Source and Mode of Transmission
1. Ingestion of contaminated food.
2. Feco- oral route through direct contact
3. Contaminated water supply
Pathogenesis
Toxins (exotoxins and exotoxins) of compylobacter cause both intestinal and extra intestinal diseases.
C. jejuni cause acute gastroenteritis
(Food poisioning)
Clinical symptoms
Fever
Diarrhea (without bloody stool)
Nausea and vomiting
Gastrointestinal disturbances
Bacteremia

Cultural characteristics and culture
Aerobic and facultative anaerobes growing simple media at optimum temperature of 37 degree celcius, media blood agar medium with antibiotics.
Filteration
Due to small size, it can pass through bacteriologic filters.
Treatment and Prevention
Fluid and electrolyte used in case of diarrhoea.
In severe case, antibiotis should administered.
Ciprofloxacin is effective antibiotic.
Prevention
Through coocking of food especially, poultry and pasteurisation of milk and milk products is essential prevent of compylobacteriosis.
