 Herpes simplex virus (HSV)

Man is the only natural host.

Herpes simplex type 1 is associated with ocular and oral lesions whiile hepres type 2 frequently causes genital Infection.

Types of Herpes Simplex virus

1. HSV-type 1

2. HSV-type 2

HSV- Type 1

Causes infection of mouth, eye, CNS etc.

Pathogenesis

Includes;

Gingivostomatitis (Vesicular eruption in mouth)

Pharyngitis, cold, sore

Skin lesion in non genital area

Encephalitis

Keratoconjunctivitis

Blisters

JSV-Type 2

Causes infection of genitalia, only man is natural host.

Pathogenesis

Transmitted by sexual contact. It produces illness;

Herpes labialis

Keratoconjunctivitis

Meningoencephalitis

Genital herpes (affect penis, uretra in male, Vagina, vulva, urethra in female).

Neonatal herpes

Laboratory Diagnosis

Specimen collection; skin swab and genital secretion.

Culture on chorioallantoic membrane of chick embryo CAM.

Culture in rabbit kidney and human amnion cell.

Neutralization test

Treatment

For skin and eye infection (keratoconjunctivitis) 5-iodo- 2 deoxyuridine is beneficial.
