Varicella virus
It causes chicken pox which mainly affects children.
Source and Mode of Transmission
Chicken pox patient is major source of infection.
There is no animal reservoir host.
It is transmitted through inhalation (respiratory droplets), by direct contact.
Pathogenesis
Portal of entry is respiratory tract.
Incubation period is 7-23 days.
It is characterized by crops of eruption on skin and mucus membrane with high grade fever.
Sometime complication occurs like;
Rashes, Encephalitis, Pneumoniae
Laboratory Diagnosis
Specimen collection; vesicle fluid
Giemsa stain; microscope examination of vesicle smear.
Culture in human embryonic tissue
Serological test
Prophylaxis and Treatment
Varicella vaccine (chicken pox vaccine) that protect against chicken pox.
Routine immunization to prevent chicken pox.
